Ski For Fitness

This  friendly, non-competitive class is for recreational skiers or aspiring racers who want to improve skills and fitness at their own pace and level. Choose instruction in Classic, Skate, or both. You’ll also meet other skiers and have fun!  Great review of technique from basics to more advanced.

Beginners who have never skied or are returning to skiing after a long absencs may be more interested in the Thursday Nordic Newbies Program.

In January, Beginners can learn to Skate Ski on Tuesdays, and Classic on Thursdays. This will give them the ability to refine their skills in February by taking the regular Skate Ski program on Tuesdays and the regular Classic program on Thursdays.

Each program runs for 4 sessions and all lessons are 2 hours long.

Saturday Lessons, 1:00 - 3:00 pm:

Ski for Fitness-Classic: January 6, 13, 20, 27   
Ski for Fitness -Skate:  February 3, 10, 24, March 2  (no lesson on Family Day weekend)
Ski for Total Fitness! Classic and Skate: All 8 lessons on dates above

Tuesday Ski For Fitness (Skate Skiing), 1:00-3:00 pm:

Ski For Fitness-Beginner Skate: January 9, 16, 23,  30

Thursday Ski For Fitness (Classic Skiing), 1:00-3:00 pm

Nordic Newbies ( Beginner Classic) January 4, 11, 18, 25

Fee: $60 for each group of 4 lessons plus $35 club membership fee*.
Ski for Total Fitness! (all 8 lessons) is $115 (plus $35 membership fee*).

If you want to take both Saturday and Tuesday sessions in January, we can arrange that. Please contact the Ski For Fitness Coordinator, Sue Sedgwick.

* Club Membership includes a mandatory membership to our governing bodies, Nordiq Canada and Cross Country Ontario. This is necessary for insurance purposes and to ensure qualification standards of coaches as well as proper safety protocols. Members also receive discounts at local stores and are entitled to participate in club social events. The fee is charged once per season. (If you sign up for multiple programs, you only pay the club fee once.)

Program Fees do NOT include Arrowhead Provincial Park Vehicle Pass.  This must be purchased separately from the Park.  ($60 for the winter)

Adult Mid-Week Group Lesson Descriptions

Nordic Newbies (Thursdays in January)

This friendly, supportive, non-competitive class is for those who are new to Nordic skiing or returning after a long absence.  You will start with the basics and progress at your own pace and comfort level.  During the first lesson you will be asked to sit on the snow with your skis on and be given strategies for getting up after a fall.  The minimum requirement for this program is that you can get yourself up off the snow on your own. Instructors will help you navigate the trails at Arrowhead so you can gain confidence to ski on your own and continue to improve your fitness.  Each session is Classic technique only. After this 4-week program you may want to further develop your skills in the Adult Ski for Fitness, Classic program that runs in February. Please contact the program coordinator if you are thinking of purchasing new equipment and she can give you some suggestions.  If you are interested in learning how to Skate Ski, please look at the Beginner Skate Ski program.

Ski for Fitness, Classic (Thursdays in February)

This non-competitive program is for skiers who are comfortable with classic skiing and want to improve their skills and fitness level. Skiing with a group is a fun, social activity.  Perhaps you have a goal of skiing the Muskoka Loppet and would like to learn to some strategies to become a faster, more efficient skier.

Beginner Skate Ski (Tuesdays in January)

This friendly, supportive, non-competitive class is for those who are new to skate skiing or are self-taught. Unlike classic skiing, learning to skate ski is not intuitive and instruction will help you build the necessary skills and confidence. It can take a few lessons to learn the basics and you will love the feeling of when the technique comes together, and you feel like you are flying on the snow. Completion of this course in January will prepare you for the Ski For Fitness Skate in February,

Ski for Fitness: Skate (Tuesdays in February

This 4-week program is for people who are comfortable with the basics of Skate Skiing and wish to refine their techinque and improve their fitness level.  Skiing with a friendly, supportive group is a fun social activity.
